"It's all about equality": Judith opens dining room at supported living scheme

Judith Cummins MP joined tenants and staff of Habinteg Housing Association to help celebrate the opening of a brand new community restaurant on Friday October 12.

Judith had the honour of cutting the ribbon and welcoming the tenants in to the space for the first time since the refurbishment began. She also had the opportunity to hear each of their experiences of living at the supported living scheme located in Wagtail Close, Bradford.

The scheme, which opened in 2001 and boasts such previous visitors as HRH Princess Anne, is designed to enable disabled tenants to achieve maximum independence and play an active part in their community.

Tenants at the Habinteg scheme receive additional care and support from Bradford Council. As well as having their own individual apartments, they are invited to enjoy a fully catered evening meal once a day in the communal kitchen and dining area.

Speaking at the event, Judith said: “Last time I visited a Habinteg scheme I was struck by how easy it is to make a home accessible for disabled people and I always keep that in mind when I'm talking to people about housing. It is so important that disabled people have access to the same things non-disabled people have. It's all about equality”

Habinteg Director of Operations, Jameel Malik, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Elior and Bell Group for sponsoring the refurbishment of this communal kitchen and dining space. Community is incredibly important to our tenants so it's great to have somewhere to congregate, eat and socialise.”
