Judith welcomes fund that will pay for children’s funerals

This week Judith has welcomed the Government’s announcement to deliver a Children’s Funeral Fund.

The campaign was led by Carolyn Harris, MP for Swansea East, who tragically lost her son Martin. Judith has long been a supporter of the campaign, having put her name to a Parliamentary motion back in 2016.

The fund means that parents in England will no longer have to pay their local authority for the burial or cremation of a child as of the 23rd July 2019.

Judith Cummins MP said: “There is nothing worse than a parent losing a child, the shock and pain of which is unimaginable. Helping with the funeral costs will not ease the pain that parents are going through, but it will remove an unnecessary financial barrier that existed.

“I am so proud of Carolyn for leading this campaign over the past three years, so that no parent will have to experience the difficulties she faced. Bereaved parents, in the most awful of moments, will now be able to provide a dignified funeral for their child.”

Carolyn Harris said: "I’m so grateful for the support that Judith gave me during this campaign. It has been a painful journey and without the support of colleagues, would of been so much harder. But we won and now no parent will have to put financial worry above grieving."
