Events at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and Sheikh Jarrah
STATEMENT FROM JUDITH CUMMINS MP
I share the concerns of the many hundreds of constituents who have contacted me about the Sheikh Jarrah evictions and the appalling and deteriorating situation in and around the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. I condemn the attacks on civilians that have taken place in recent days. These are deeply troubling events and together with my Labour parliamentary colleagues I am pressing the UK government to act.
As many experts in the field and the United Nations’s spokeperson on Human Rights has stated, if the Sheikh Jarrah evictions are set in motion it would be a grave violation of Israel’s obligations under international law. The international community must hold the Israeli authorities to account for its actions and the UK government must step-up.
The violence at the Al-Aqsa Mosque site is sickening. It would be abhorrent at any time but for it to take place during Ramadan is callous and can only fuel the enmity which has taken hold.
The UK government’s response to these events has been disappointing. Britain cannot be a passive observer and must step forward to insist that the Israeli authorities stop the violence, injustices and violations of Palestinian human rights.
I will continue to advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people.
