Judith pushes Govt to commit to levelling up and regeneration in Bradford

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

Odsal is a prime candidate for the regeneration opportunities

Today in Parliament, Bradford South MP Judith Cummins has invited the Sports Minister to visit Odsal Stadium to discuss its regeneration, amidst her concerns that economic uncertainty could put levelling up bids at risk.

Questioning Stuart Andrew MP, Sports Minister for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) in Parliament this morning, Judith highlighted the start of the Rugby League World Cup and asked the Government to commit to levelling up:

"With the men’s competition kicking off last Saturday and with the women’s and wheelchair teams due to get going next week, we can see that the Rugby League World Cup is really getting into its stride."

"To secure the legacy of this great event, and also the Bradford City of Culture 2025, I am backing an ambitious Levelling Up bid to transform Odsal Stadium, the iconic home of the Bradford Bulls in my constituency."

"But with the recent economic uncertainty, I am concerned that this bid could fall by the wayside. Will the Sports Minister show Bradford that the government is serious about levelling up and visit Odsal stadium with me?”

The ambitious £50m levelling up bid, which Judith has previously called a ‘once in a generation opportunity’ for Bradford, would see regeneration of the Osdal area of Bradford South, delivering a world-class music, culture, and sport arena, park and ride, and sports training complex, generating hundreds of jobs and creating long-term opportunities in the city.

Responding, the Minister said:

“The Honourable Lady rightly highlights Bradford’s ambitious plans, particularly given its city of culture status. I would be more than happy to come and see her.”

Speaking afterwards, Judith said:

“Now is the time to push for investment into Bradford, and I will keep fighting for Bradford to have its fair share.”
