Dear Foreign Secretary,
I am writing to you regarding the current situation in Kashmir.
I am extremely concerned about the unilateral decision taken by the Indian Government to revoke Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This is likely to increase tensions in the region and destabilise efforts towards a peaceful and political settlement for the people of Kashmir.
I am also concerned about the increase in the number of troops and paramilitary police which have been sent into an already heavily militarised zone. This follows a number of concerning developments including the lockdown of the region, the banning of public gatherings, the closure of schools and the placing of Kashmiri leaders under house arrest.
India and Pakistan must work together to bring about a lasting and political solution, which protects the human rights of the Kashmiri people and guarantees them the democratic right to determine their own future.
The UK Government needs to play a constructive role in bringing an end to this intolerable situation and achieving a lasting solution. I would ask you to make urgent representations to the Indian Government regarding the situation in Kashmir and to report to MPs as soon as possible on the steps you are taking.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Judith Cummins MP
